Mariana was the first city and capital of the State of Minas Gerais.
Besides its luxurous and enchanting baroque architecture, the city is specially known for its various handicraft shops, its local gastronomy, its carnival, the mine Mina da Passegem which is the oldest gold mine of the country and the largest in the world to be opened to public visitation, the beautiful waterfalls neighbouing the city and the famous train dating from the 1910s and that still links today Mariana to other historical cities of the region.
