Belo Horizonte is the capital city of Minas Gerais, however the name also designates the entire metropolitan area around the capital that gathers 34 municipalities including Confins where the international airport is located.
Belo Horizonte is one of the 12 host cities of the 2014 FIFA World Cup that will take place in the Mineirao, the fifth largest football stadium in Brazil that will also host the 2016 Summer Olympics football competition.
“Belo Horizonte” means Beautiful Horizons. The city was built in the end of the 19th century with the ambition to bring modernism and economical development to Minas Gerais, since the old capital Ouro Preto could not sustain the industrial evolution and the growing population.
Today, Belo Horizonte is one of the most important financial and cultural hubs of Brazil.
The Praça da Liberdade (Square of Freedom) is one of the main cultural centers of Belo Horizonte (BH). The beautiful park is surrounded by luxurious buildings of the colonial period that are today very interesting museums.
